Singing The Scenery

Baek, Joong-ki listens silently the sound of Seo-river of Yeongwol when he is painting, drinking donggangju(rice liquor) made in Yeongwol Is it the wind? Is it a blue message somewhere? He holds his guitar, his favorite horse which is always beside him and strums the strings with the infinite resonance embraced by the mountain. His tone is lengthy like a long memory and goes over the trees, the flowers, and the field of Yeongwol-river, nearish and far away. Finally it touches the blue star of the other world and this song of the primitive is his art of drawing.

Baek, Joong-ki is not only a painter but a troubadour and bohemian of a star crossing this world and the next. He makes so many paths on the canvas and on them he tries to embody the suffering, the love, and ups and downs of his life. His motives are the song of birth, growth, and extinction different from Picasso's “Blue Period.” The song of life and extinction based on the blue color is his view of nature, philosophy, and the history of his life. He is the person who has the ears of the wind… he was born in Yeongwol and has never gone out of it.

His painting material is the ‘homage to the antiquated’ and all things which come from and vanish into nature, He is so simple and plain and the purity itself which does not reveal any aberration is his real worth. If so, what is the immanent nature of his paintings which eliminate any kind of abstractness?

His paintings can be divided into the two worlds. The one is nature itself and the other is the scenery of villages which nest in it. They are in complementary relations, not separate but coexisting.

The village of his is not a suburb but the one set in a valley like eggs in a nest. An antiquated train more than 1,000 years old is passing through the village. One of his works, “The Train Is Passing” shows some transcendental phantasm which goes beyond the time and the space in which a train is passing a mountain village through a snowstorm. It leaves an echo faintly over the mountain and conjures up a pathetic tone like Mikis Theodorakis’ “The Train Leaves at Eight”

Therefore, his paintings are just poems and fairy tales.

However, it is not easy to find human beings in his painting. But we should not read his paintings just as landscapes while we cannot find any trace of humans in a small grocery, “café Rose”, a rice mill, sloping roads and the paths on the high hills shown in his paintings. Just in a few paintings, we can see the rare marks of humans and the scene of the laundry hung out on a clothesline, but they are also reduced in a small size. But this is the life of Baek, Joong-ki, intended or not.

But surprisingly we ruminate our past life in that lonesome and silent scenery. We can read abruptly the blank space of the stories hidden secretly among houses shadowed by locust trees, alleys, empty paths, birch trees, the night sky of the blue, and the milky way.

It seems that this and that stories are hidden there. Imagine that they sell only ‘Samyang Remyun’ in the small grocery and a fossilized, old madam of the tiled roof café is looking out lonesome and silent world indifferently and a hobgoblin with a unicorn makes an abrupt appearance in the forest of white birches and the cry of babies explodes like lespedeza flowers.

Therefore, his paintings reveal some human warmth impliedly. Just feel! It’s all we should do. Just hear the song of the colors with their feeling. It is because we are always playing, breathing, crying, laughing, and dreaming in it. He grieves at the vanishing things but it also means a kind of birth into a new world as nature shows us itself as it really is and the birth and change of some different meaning inheres in it.

In fact, Baek, Joong-ki is a man of hot temperament. He has some nature of fighter who reveals his anger directly against any kind of unjustice of politics while his paintings give us stillness, beauty, and loneliness of star and sea. Simultaneously his character has lyrical and ritual romanticism which is his disposition and attraction.

He has decisiveness in his sadness and is willing to hear strong shouting of grass roots in the swinging of wild flowers. Can we read this in his paintings? There is still no definite answer to this question. We cannot guarantee what kind of change in his nature has (and will have) happen in his past and future life. But we are certain that his warm glance to nature, the endless attachment to the blossoming and extinction of a life and this kind of all pure work of his will go continuously.

Finally, I hope to expand the spectrum of understanding of him by introducing pieces of his memorandums.

“I have my own way of painting… I feel deep and unlimited attachment to the antiquated and empty houses and scenery which shall vanish and be extinguished soon. A house, a tree, a hill, a flower, wind, a star… and their mournful romance.”

“I will be a painter who draws a mountain. The mountain changes according to the seasons, morning and evening, and the attitude toward which I have.”
